These three 24 inch by 24 inch panels were commissioned by Calvary Cemetery in Seattle. Designed and painted by Molly, they were fabricated and installed by Joseph Hester in June 2011.

The Descent: Faithful Friends
Mary Magdalene and other faithful friends remove the body of Jesus from the cross with love and tenderness. The sun is low, making shadows across the crushed grass where tiny violets give up their mournful scent. The bare-branched tree on the hill beyond stands leafless and stark, a symbol of life extinguished.

The Entombment: Backward Glance
Mary, hurrying to leave the sealed tomb as the Sabbath sun sets, looks back one last time. She carries away his prayer shawl, the last of his worldly possessions, as she brushes past a thicket of rose brambles that recall the cruelty of the crown of thorns. The setting sun casts her shadow along the dusty path to the seemingly irrevocable solidity of the rock tomb. The broken branch on the tree is a poignant reminder of all that has been lost.

Resurrection: First Witness
The annointing oil forgotten, Mary goes to tell the others of her encounter with the risen Christ whom she had originally mistaken for the gardener. The rose thicket has burst into bloom, scenting the golden sunrise with ineffable joy. Jesus offers us his wounded hand as evidence of a reality greater than that of the dark tomb. The tree, fully blossomed, now signifies the Tree of Life.
